Too often they can go unrecognised and undiagnosed. The following symptoms are indicative of DVT or PE but are not exclusive nor exhaustive. Remember if in doubt get checked out

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT):

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins of your body, usually in your legs, butcoccasionally a DVT can occur in your arm.  

The signs and symptoms of a DVT include:

  • Swelling, usually in one leg (or arm)
  • Leg pain or tenderness
  • Reddish / blue skin discoloration
  • Leg (or arm) warm to touch

These symptoms of a blood clot may feel similar to a pulled muscle, although they may also be accompanied by other symptoms that include:

  • Swelling in the leg (or arm)
  • Slight discoloration
  • Possibly feel warm

Pulmonary Embolism (PE):

A PE occurs when clots break off from a DVT and travel to the lung, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE), This is a very serious condition that can be fatal.

The signs and symptoms of a PE include:

  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Chest pain-sharp, stabbing; that may get worse with deep breaths
  • A rapid heart rate
  • Unexplained cough, sometimes with blood-streaked mucus
