Haematologists told to conserve thrombolytics amid ongoing global shortage

Haematologists in the UK have been told to conserve stocks of alteplase and tenecteplaconserve stocks of alteplase and se amid ongoing supply constraints that are expected to last until early next year, as stocks of a key alternative thrombolytic are also running low. 

However, Professor Beverley Hunt, a consultant in thrombosis and haemostasis and co-founder of Thrombosis UK, told the limbic that it is becoming evident what while there is currently a “proper shortage” of tenecteplase and alteplase, there are also “impending shortages of urokinase and streptokinase”, which are not mentioned in the patient safety alert.
